Saturday 7th September

NEIGHBOUR CUP : Our Finals got underway with the Mens Triples. The winners were Roger Lawson, Mark Baxter and Tony Liggins. They quickly established a good lead over their opposition of Stuart Ray, Norman Gray and Del Behenna, going 8 - 1 up after 6 ends. Although just one shot changed hands on 14 of the 17 ends played, with some very tight heads, the final score was 15 - 6.

HANDICAP : Conceeding 3 shots start, defending champion Del Behenna took on Tony Liggins. Buoyed up by his win in the morning triples, Tony produced some great bowling and won convincingly by 21 shots to 9 to lift his second trophy of the day.

Sunday 8th September

PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP : In his first Club final, Graham Barlow partnered Del Behenna against Norman Gray and Mick Bailey. Although Norman and Mick were 5 shots ahead after 4 ends, Graham and Del took 7 of the next 8 ends to gain a 9 shot lead at 17 -8. This they maintained for the ensuing ends to record a 23 - 14 victory.

SAMUELS CUP: Seeking his third trophy of the weekend, Tony Liggins was up against Roger Lawson. This was Roger's first singles final and he soon found himself in trouble against a confident opponent, going 8 shots down at 14 - 6 after 10 ends. Although he had reduced the deficet to 5 three ends later, Tony finished strongly to record a 21 - 11 victory.

The afternoon session started on time at 2 pm, but the heavens opened 10 minutes later and by 2.30 the green was completely flooded. Play was abandoned for the day.

Friday 13th September:

VINCENT CUP: The two bowls pairs Final saw John Stallwood and Mick Bailey up against Syd Attridge and Steve Woodley. Steve was kindly standing in for Mike Peck. John and Mick soon took control and were 7 shots to the good at halfway. They continued their good play, taking 7 of the last 9 ends, the final tally being a 21 - 9 win.

Saturday 14th September:

WIGHTMAN CUP: The 2 bowls singles Championship between Del Behenna and Richard Beckett recommenced with the score 1 - 1 after being rained off last weekend. Del wasted no time winning the first 5 ends played to establish a 6 shot lead. Try as he may, Richard was unable to reduce the deficit and the final score was a 16 - 7 win for Del.

LEN & PEGGY MACEY TROPHY:  Lorraine Dare, Norman Gray and Steve Woodley, (standing in for Mike Peck,)
took on Dennis Robertson, (standing in for Roger Lawson,) Eileen Peck and Tony Liggins. Tony, seeking his fourth trophy, picked up a 4 on the sixth end to go 7 - 2 up and Steve's trio were unable to land a blow thereafter. Although most of the heads were tight, Dennis, Eileen and Tony ran out the winners by 19 shots to 7.

TOMBS PLATE: The 4 bowls mixed singles Final gave Tony Liggins the chance to make it 5 out of 5 Final wins. Up against Mick Bailey, Tony saw that target drift away, losing 9 of the first 11 ends to go 10 shots down. He halved the deficit to 5 at 15 - 10, but Mick always had the upper hand and scored a 21 - 12 win to lift his first singles trophy.

SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP: The blue riband event saw Alan Butler, playing in his first singles final, up against   Del Behenna, bidding for a third consecutive Championship. Early exchanges saw Alan go 9 -5 up after 8 ends, but, after the 12th end, scores were level at 10 apiece. A 4 for Del on the 13th end looked ominous for Alan but he came back to level again at 14 - 14. Perhaps Del's greater experience  then came to the fore as he claimed the last 4 ends played to maintain the Championship by 21 shots to 14. Alan, in his first season of singles competition, will surely be on top of the podium before too long.

The presentation of trophies by Club President Beryl Walford, assisted by Captain Tony Lambert, followed. The proceeds of the raffles held over the two weeks put £71.05 into Club funds. A big thank you to all who marked the singles games, Keith Puddephatt, Sue Ablett, Richard Ferguson and Tony Carthy. Thanks also to Tony Liggins and helpers who got the green fit to play on in difficult conditions and to Tony Carthy for acting as Umpire (along with Dennis Robertson) and for his sterling work behind the bar.
Finally, thanks to all who came along to give their support to our Finalists.
Lets have a bumper entry list for all competitions in 2025.
